What Surfboard For Me?

I live in Syracuse, NY. I would like to go to the lakes up here and do some surfing. On good days waves can be anywhere from 1-3 occasionally 4' on a real windy day. I heard the longer the board the better for smaller waves. It will also be my first time surfing...so yeah lol. I was looking at a 8'2 softboard but would that be big enough for the small waves or should I go with the 9'0? I am 15, my height is probably between 5-8 and 5-10 and I weigh between 105-110. Don't know exactly lol. I'm just nervous that the bigger I go it will be to big to carry and paddle on...
