Is it better to study a traditional subject instead of a vocational one?

I had a college interview today and the man I was speaking to was talking about Oxford university, he mentioned that they do prefer the more traditional subjects like English Lit and Maths etc. There's nothing wrong with vocational courses though, depends what you prefer to do.
